30km from the centre of Bujumbura, on the west of Burundi lies the area of Gomvyi. Here, our friends at Omwani Coffee Company have been working with Burundi speciality coffee pioneers Migoti Coffee Company to help farmers receive the right price for the work they are putting in.
Following years of civil war, coffee offered a route out of difficulty for many of the farming communities in rural Burundi and boosted global visibility and foreign exchange. Despite coffee plantations originating during Belgian colonial rule in the early 1900s, the industry has taken back control and now takes great pride in the product they create. Pascal Ntawuhezisi is the farmer responsible for this excellent crop. Owning 1000 coffee trees, he delivers around 1500kg of cherries each year to the Migoti Washing Station for processing. Here, over 250 temporary workers check, dry and process the beans before exportation. This complex cup has floral and herbaceous aromas with fruit forward notes of blueberry accompanied by a well bodied mouthfeel.
